🕋Part 1 Case Closed
Qurʾān-Only vs Qurʾān + Sunnah — The Forensic Verdict
Subtitle:
A Textual and Logical Examination of Islamic Authority Based Solely on the Qurʾān
1️⃣ The Question That Defines Everything
Does Islam stand on the Qurʾān alone, or on the Qurʾān plus the Sunnah?
This single question determines the foundation of Islamic epistemology.
Every verse, claim, and theological construct must fall under one of these two frameworks:
| Feature | Qurʾān-Only | Qurʾān + Sunnah |
|---|---|---|
| Source of Law | Qurʾān alone | Qurʾān + extra-Qurʾānic Sunnah |
| Revelation Defined As | What Allah calls waḥy or tanzīl | Includes Prophet’s remembered speech/actions |
| Preservation Claim | Qurʾān only (15 : 9) | Extended to Sunnah by juristic assertion |
| Obedience to Messenger | As conveyor of revelation | As secondary law-giver |
| Revelation Scope | Closed with Qurʾān | Open via later transmission |
| Authority After Prophet | Qurʾān alone | Qurʾān + authenticated Sunnah |
These two systems cannot both be true without violating the law of non-contradiction.
2️⃣ The Qurʾān-Only Position (Textual and Logical)
Premise 1
The Qurʾān is the only scripture Allah explicitly names as revealed, preserved, and fully detailed.
(6 : 114 – 115 | 16 : 89 | 15 : 9)
Premise 2
No verse identifies, protects, or elevates any second corpus (Hadith / Sunnah / sīrah) as co-revelation.
Conclusion
Islam’s divine foundation rests solely on the Qurʾān.
All other sources are human testimony, not divine revelation.
3️⃣ The Qurʾān + Sunnah Model
Premise 1
The Qurʾān commands obedience to the Messenger (4 : 80 | 59 : 7).
Premise 2
That obedience extends to his example and judgments, transmitted later as Sunnah.
Conclusion
Islam stands on two authorities — the Qurʾān and the Prophet’s Sunnah — the latter functioning as a practical and legislative extension.
4️⃣ Logical Collision
Mutual exclusivity:
If the Qurʾān is sufficient and fully detailed (6 : 114 – 115), a second authority is redundant.
If the Sunnah is co-legislative, revelation exists outside the Qurʾān, negating its claim of completeness.
Burden of proof:
The Qurʾān-only side cites explicit verses naming revelation.
The Qurʾān + Sunnah side relies on inference, context-extension, and later consensus — none named in the text.
Epistemic hierarchy:
Divine revelation is what Allah names.
Human preservation is what history records.
Confusing the two collapses divine certainty into historical probability.
5️⃣ The Concessions Secured
Through textual and logical testing, the opponent ultimately conceded:
✅ The Qurʾān names no second revelation besides itself.
✅ The term “Sunnah of the Prophet” never appears in the Qurʾān.
✅ The Prophet’s non-Qurʾānic speech is never called waḥy.
✅ All Sunnah references in the Qurʾān refer only to Sunnat Allāh.
✅ The Qurʾān alone claims completeness, detail, preservation, and sufficiency.
✅ Therefore, on textual grounds alone, the Qurʾān-only position stands unshaken.
6️⃣ What Remains — And Why It’s Human, Not Divine
The remaining arguments for a dual-source Islam are historical necessities, not divine texts.
They revolve around:
Epistemology: “How do we know what the Prophet did?”
Transmission: “How was it remembered and codified?”
Law: “How are rituals defined without it?”
Each depends on human preservation, not Qurʾānic revelation.
That is why the opposing side ultimately admitted:
“Those who uphold the Sunnah as a second legislative source do so on extra-Qurʾānic premises — not from within the Qurʾān’s own explicit words.”
That is the line of demarcation.
7️⃣ The Final Forensic Verdict
Textual verdict:
Only the Qurʾān is named, protected, and described as revelation.Logical verdict:
Dual-source Islam violates Qurʾānic sufficiency and introduces contradiction.Epistemic verdict:
The Qurʾān-only model rests on divine certitude; the Qurʾān + Sunnah model rests on human recollection.
8️⃣ The Anchor Verse
“Say: Shall I seek a judge other than Allah, when it is He who has sent down to you the Book explained in detail?”
— Qurʾān 6 : 114
That verse is not metaphor. It is methodology.
It establishes the Qurʾān as the sole criterion of judgment and the end of revelation.
9️⃣ Closing Reflection
The debate is not about emotion, tradition, or culture — it is about authority.
If revelation is singular, Islam stands on divine certainty.
If revelation is dual, it stands on human memory.
Between the two, only one can logically endure.
“Judgment belongs to none but Allah.” (12 : 40)
That is not a slogan — it is the closing statement of logic itself.
✅ Verdict
On textual grounds alone, the Qurʾān-only position stands unshaken.
All claims to a co-equal Sunnah derive from post-Qurʾānic human transmission — not from revelation.
